Transfer Switch (ATS) switches the load between mains and generator: it monitors the mains, commands the start, transfers, and re-transfers with a delay so the set is not shocked.

In contactor-based ATS the wear is in the main contacts and the mechanical interlock. In motorised-breaker ATS it is the charging motor and the limit switches. Knowing which one your panel uses tells you what to keep in stock.

The set starts but the load is not transferred. What do I check?

The signal first: mains-sensing relay, control fuse and the wiring between ATS and set. Then the interlock: if the mains contactor does not release, the generator contactor will not close, by design.

Can I fit an ATS of another brand?

Yes, as long as control voltage and logic are compatible with the set panel. With a controller-based set, the ATS must accept that controller transfer signal.
